Bazaar

This last Saturday was the Annual Bendwood Fall Bazaar. It was our first year attending as well as the very first time we have ever set up outdoors. It was such a beautiful day, no rain in sight. Christy and I met lots of fresh new faces and migrated from shadow to shadow as we started to lose our shade. We were so happy when the sun passed just enough past the car that we had some shade back. Then came the OMG! I can’t keep my eyes open, and no amount of energy drinks helped. All in all it was a fun day!

San Diego Comic Con

San Diego Comic Con, which is actually a bunch of mayhem and exhausting hours, our booth was located right next to the huge Warner Brothers Booth, which featured not only Where the Wild Things Are, music over and over again, but we also got to see the cast of TruBlood. In fact there is an interview that was done of the cast from the top of the WB balcony and you can see our booth numerous times through out it :)

Of course I would have liked to have gotten out and attended some of the panels but didn’t make the time to do so. Hopefully I’ll do so next year. Happi Paper even managed to meet Snoopy!

Sleep will be Needed!

Christy and I will be headed back to Houston immediately after Otakon ends tomorrow.

So far Otakon has been a blast, it was so refreshing to see so many cosplayers and fans. After we arrived for setup on Thursday, thank God we could drive our Kyoot Mobile onto the Convention Floor! We had it completely packed tight with Happi’s smooshed into every nook and cranny.

Packed in Tight

Christy and I decided to drive around the convention center to see what was going on. We were astounded to see people stretched around the convention center, just waiting to get their badges, we garnered quite a few shutterbugs on the way around. Friday and Saturday were great! We even had some older merchandise come visit the booth, one such item was the rare, maroon Berry Ninja Bag, he is now only in Dark Gray, he’s a ninja what can I say, he has to blend in.

So the reason for the sleep will be needed. San Diego Comic Con. We have to get from Baltimore, MD back to Houston, TX and arrive in San Diego, CA no later than 8am on Wednesday. The plan is to drive all night from Baltimore, restock at the office and then leave for San Diego early the next morning, which will be Tuesday, then drive all the way through to San Diego to arrive early Wednesday morning, so we don’t miss our assisted material handling program. I predict that I will sleep very well Wednesday night!

AX – SPJA

I have to get this off my mind…

AX [Anime Expo] held at the Los Angeles Convention Center, supposed to be the biggest Anime Convention in the United States, well, it would be if it was back in Anaheim, but no someone had to get adamant about the convention being held only on July 4th weekend in 2007, at which time the Anaheim convention people said sorry we already have a con that weekend how bout another? Well we all know the result, we spent 2007 in Long Beach, which was a very good convention for us, and still completely accessible for the attendees, but apparently Long Beach decided that they didn’t or couldn’t have AX back in 2008, and the result was AX, really SPJA [Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation] entered into a 5 year, FIVE YEAR, contract for AX to be held at the downtown Los Angeles Convention Center. GASP!!  This was a disaster in the making, we figured in 2008 that it wouldn’t be that big of a deal that the fans would still come, attendance was down, despite the assurances of SPJA saying that they had more attendees than ever. We heard from many fans at other conventions that said they normally attend AX but their parents said, no way, no how, are you going to be downtown LA, where there is not even an attached hotel, let alone one that is close enough to walk to the convention center. So 2009, same venue, July 4th weekend, and we thought that the fans would be at least equal to 2008, but we were very mistaken, horribly so. Take it from someone who was there and has the benefit of being there all day every day of the con in the dealers room, for several years. The numbers were way down, yet come July 6, guess what, yeah you probably guessed it, SPJA announced record numbers of attendees. I ask where were these attendees? They were certainly not at the convention center. Additionally, there was a complete decline of the number of cosplayers, and the majority of those that were there had costumes that they could pack and dress in the restroom at the convention center. SPJA is killing AX. In my opinion they need to suck it up and admit that they made a mistake. Further I am sure that fans will readily attend on a non July 4 weekend, if it means being back in Anaheim. Plus parents will have no worries about letting their children attend. I don’t know what the penalty for breaking the five year contract will be…but it would be worth it!

Enough said, I am stepping off of my soapbox…for now.
